Basic Oncology Acupuncture Certificate Program

A growing number of hospitals and community cancer clinics are integrating acupuncture into their cancer care program. There is a need for acupuncturists who specialize in this field of treating cancer patients. Whether you are seeking an oncology acupuncture position in an integrative oncology practice, or simply want to be more effective in treating cancer patients in a private practice, this certificate program is for you.

This 36-hour specialist certification program in Oncology Acupuncture is divided into seven modules:

Michael has been working with hospitals and community clinic practices to integrate acupuncture into conventional medical settings. He recently practiced in the Integrative Medicine pilot program at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville to provide acupuncture in their Breast Cancer Center.

2. Evidence-Based Practice of Oncology Acupuncture – 11 hours

Course Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:

Course Description

This useful course presents the theory and practice of combining traditional root-cause acupuncture with current acupuncture research protocols for managing symptoms of cancer treatment. We call this dynamic combination of root and branch treatment for cancer patients “Oncology Acupuncture”. While Oncology Acupuncture has particularly important applications in hospitals and other integrative healthcare settings, it also is a very practical and effective method to improve cancer patient outcomes in a private acupuncture practice.

3. Fundamentals of Conventional Oncology for Acupuncturists – 6 hours

Course Description

This course provides a basic theoretical understanding of conventional oncology practice. This specialized training is highly recommended for any acupuncturist wanting to practice in an integrative oncology setting. The student will become familiar with basic medical terminology specific to oncology, useful in reading oncology medical records. An overview of conventional oncology sub-specialties and the cancer treatment process will be presented.

4. Safe Practices in Oncology Acupuncture – 3 hours

This course presents the key knowledge needed to safely practice acupuncture on cancer patients. When not to treat patients, safe needling techniques, and when to refer patients to oncologists or other modalities will be covered. The student will also be able to describe safe practices regarding drug-herb interactions in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

5. Biomedicine of Oncology Acupuncture – 1 hour

This course provides a basic theoretical understanding of the biological mechanisms of acupuncture, and how to understand patients’ MRI reports. This specialized training is highly recommended for any acupuncturist wanting to practice in an integrative oncology setting. The student will become able to communicate intelligently with conventional oncology physicians and their support team.

6. Integrating Traditional Methods in Oncology Acupuncture – 4 hours

This course integrates traditional diagnosis and treatment methods that are not only specific to the needs of cancer patients, but are applicable to any acupuncture patient. The student will be able to synthesize key Five Element and TCM methods in their Oncology Acupuncture practice. Emphasis is placed on deepening communication and rapport skills with your patients, as well as good communication practices with conventional providers.

7. Oncology Acupuncture Practical – 8 hours

This practical course consists of a whole day in clinic, treating oncology patients with course director, Michael Kowalski A.P.


Introduction to Five Element Acupuncture

Course Objectives

This course introduces key concepts of Worsley Five Element Acupuncture. Participants will gain a deeper knowledge of each of the 5 Elements, the diagnostic tools and methods unique to this style of acupuncture, and how the diagnosis applies to Qi energy pathways in the body and 5 Element treatment methods. Graduates of this course will be able to make more informed referrals to acupuncturists, and may use this introductory course as a preparation for our Five Element Training Program.

Course Description

This one-weekend introductory course is an overview of Five Element Acupuncture, and is designed for health professionals and advanced students alike. This course is exciting and informative for anyone with an interest in the Five Element system of acupuncture, and provides a preparatory foundation for prospective applicants of the year-long Training Program. Our introductory program is directed by Michael Kowalski, A.P., Dr. Ac., and taught by himself along with other well-qualified 5 Element Institute faculty practitioners. The 5 Element Institute is an approved continuing education provider by the Florida Board of Acupuncture, and this course is approved for 15 hours of continuing education credits by the Florida Board of Acupuncture.

The Five Element Acupuncture Training Program

Course Objectives

The program offers extensive training in Five Element theory, and with emphasis on the development of the clinical skills and clinical experience necessary to effectively practice Five Element Acupuncture. Graduates of our program are certified Five Element practitioners, and are thoroughly prepared to begin practicing this wonderful system of medicine upon completion.

Course Description

Our year-long training in Five Element Acupuncture is the first of its kind in the Southeast US. It is designed so that physicians, nurse practitioners, TCM acupuncturists, and other licensed health care professionals may maintain their current practice while preparing for a new, more satisfying career.

Our program is directed by Michael Kowalski, A.P., Dr. Ac., and a team of other well-qualified 5 Element Institute faculty practitioners. The on-site training consists of 10 months of 4-day sessions, combining didactic and clinical work. There are also 120 additional hours of clinical observation and supervised practice with approved Five Element practitioners. The Introduction to Five Element Acupuncture weekend course hours are transferrable into this program. This program has been approved for 330 hours of continuing education credit by the Florida Board of Acupuncture.
